Overview

Pain is a poor map. I work from what the tissue tells me.

Therapeutic massage works best when it addresses the cause rather than the site and that is how I structure a session. What a client reports and what the body is doing are two different sets of information, and I give more weight to the second.

I begin with postural observation and a review of injuries, surgeries and current conditions, then work the tissue to find where the...More restriction actually originates. It is frequently not the area a client identifies — tension refers and compensates, so the shoulder that aches is often held there by something in the ribs, the hip, or the opposite side entirely.

Once I locate the restriction, I stay with it. Releasing a compensation pattern takes sustained work in one place rather than broad coverage and that is where most of a session goes.

I draw on Swedish massage, deep tissue, myofascial release and trigger point therapy, selecting among them according to how the tissue responds instead of following a set routine.
